Considering Volunteering?

During the free Career Direction Workshop, one attendee will be invited to join me for a conversation lasting around 20 minutes. I’ll select the participant during the event from people who are willing, informed and comfortable with the format. The conversation is unrehearsed, and nobody is expected to produce a breakthrough.

A chance to experience a live career conversation

I may ask about where you are with your work, occasions when you felt engaged or frustrated, and interests or patterns that seem to recur. Together we may notice a theme worth exploring further. This is a short public demonstration of one part of a counselling approach, not a full private session, diagnosis, therapy or a promise of a particular career answer.

What will happen?

Other workshop attendees - usually around five to ten people - will hear your conversation and may see you on camera. Everyone will be asked not to record, screenshot or share what they hear, but confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in a group event. Please avoid disclosing anything you would not want heard by those attendees, including details about other people.

Who can hear it?

Do I have to talk about private or sensitive experiences?

No. You can keep the conversation focused on work and everyday experiences, decline any question, request a pause, change subject or stop at any time. You do not need to explain your decision - and you can direct any question you’re not comfortable with back at me and I promise to answer! I may also redirect or end the conversation if the topic is unsuitable for a public workshop.

For this workshop, the live career conversation will NOT be recorded by the organiser and no replay of it will be distributed. Other attendees will be asked not to make recordings.

Will it be recorded?

You can indicate interest during registration and/or volunteer during the workshop after reading this page. Shortly before the conversation, I’ll ask interested people for a sentence or two about the work-direction topic they would feel comfortable discussing. Please do not include sensitive details. I will check that the topic and circumstances are suitable for a brief public conversation. If more than one person is suitable, the participant will be selected transparently from that group, for example by a random draw. No one is guaranteed selection.

How will the volunteer be chosen?

Ticking “interested” when registering is not consent to take part. On the night you can say yes or no privately. If selected, you’ll have an opportunity to decline before your name is shared with the group, and I’ll check again before beginning. You may withdraw at any stage without affecting your access to the workshop or later services.

What does agreeing to volunteer mean?

What if no one volunteers or the conversation ends early?

That is completely fine. I may instead use an anonymised example shared with appropriate permission, or provide additional time for personal reflection and questions. The workshop will still offer value to observers.

Consider it if you are comfortable discussing a work-direction question in front of a small group and are happy to see what emerges in a short conversation. If you would prefer privacy, or if your situation involves very sensitive personal circumstances, it may be better to book a private introductory conversation via the email address below.
